Walkman:

A 3D Modeled Prop

This 3D model was created in Maya.

It takes after a Sony WM-2 that I own. I even collect cassettes that I can use with it.

Time Spent: 1 month ~ Tools Used: Maya Completed on October 30th 2024

The Model

The process was relatively straight-forward. I spent the first week blocking out the general shape of the Walkman. I split it up into three parts. There was the semi-triangular black piece and two red pieces. After I had finished detailing the model, I added holding edges to the model and made sure the model did not have any issues with the polygons.

UV Mapping and Materials

The UV Mapping portion was not as time consuming as the modeling portion. Cutting seams that hid the warping and correcting other issues in the model felt a lot less tedious. I actually really enjoyed this part. Organizing the individual maps was extremely satisfying.

I started assigning materials and customizing them to match my Sony WM-2 that I use daily. The metallic parts were more matte but the plastic parts were a lot glossier. It really tied together the prop.

Future Considerations

I really enjoyed the overall process. Having previous experience in manufacturing and computer aided design helped greatly in this project. It was odd, however, prioritizing looks over accuracy.

When you machine aluminum parts using a CNC machine, you need exact measurements so that a program can generate accurate machine code that the CNC machine follows.

In comparison, 3D models are meant to be used in the digital world. It doesn’t actually matter how it relates to the real world other than the adhering to the proportions of an object.

I do want to create 3D animations and work with characters rather than just hard surface modeling.
